Being You!

Being U-nique!

I took this photo during an epic solo journey of the Camino de Santiago in Northern Spain.

Thousands embark on this pilgrimage annually and as a celebration of life and for my 50th birthday, I decided to do a self-supported mountain bike trek for the 540 pilgrimage in September 2016.

It was early morning and I was alone on the path.

What struck me was this sunflower was the only flower among thousands of acres of farmed wheat.

Just me and the sunflower.

Why would that be of interest to you?

Let me continue.

Rose, one of my favorite yoga teachers, often shares the following phrase:

“Be You Because Everyone Else Is Taken.”

Think about that for a moment.

You are the only You there is on this entire planet.

There is one of You and You are unique and different than any other human that has lived and that will live.

You are a miracle. You are unique.

“You are powerful beyond measure, it is our light not our darkness that most frightens us……” Marianne Williamson

Yet many of us want to conform, to fit in, to play a small game of mediocrity.

To be the wheat instead of the sunflower.

I hid my life to avoid being exposed.

To avoid being seen.

To avoid having others disapprove of me.

There are events in our lives in which we adopt irrational beliefs to protect ourselves.

That belief becomes a part of our operating system and without even being aware impacts our reality.

I refer to them as transparent beliefs.

Years and years go by and we label ourselves as this or that.

We believe that is who we are.

We identify with the label and then get really good at producing evidence to support our perspective.

This is who I am and here is the evidence.

The interesting part is the evidence is produced by the belief itself.

Exploring and examining the beliefs that are limiting You from being You requires courage and vulnerability.

Liberation and freedom from an unhealthy ego is what is possible.

No longer are You compelled to conform and fit in.

You stand out and shine your light amongst a thousand others who are conforming and hiding.

Be the sunflower in a thousand acres of boring and mediocre wheat.
